Using your Xbox Wireless Controller to play Minecraft: Gear VR Edition

Starting in October 2016, you can use your Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controller to play Minecraft: Gear VR Edition on Samsung Gear VR Powered by Oculus.

Notes

You must have the latest Minecraft: Gear VR Edition [PE version 0.16]. See below for details.
You must have an Xbox Wireless Controller that supports Bluetooth. See below for details.
You must have the latest Xbox Wireless Controller update, firmware version 3.1.1220.0. See below for details.
Bluetooth does not support any attachments, such as headsets, Xbox Chatpad, or the Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter.
You must have a PC running the Windows 10 Anniversary Update or an Xbox One console to update your Xbox Wireless Controller to the latest firmware.
Follow the steps below to connect your Xbox Wireless Controller to your Samsung Gear VR and compatible phone to play Minecraft.

Step 1: Make sure your Xbox Wireless Controller is Bluetooth compatible

Your controller has this feature if it looks like the one on the left in the image below. On Bluetooth-supported controllers, the plastic surrounding the Xbox button is part of the face of the controller. On controllers without Bluetooth, the plastic surrounding the Xbox button is part of the top, where the bumpers are.

Step 2: Get the latest Xbox Wireless Controller update

You must have the latest controller update to use your Xbox Wireless Controller with Minecraft: Gear VR Edition. Follow any of the three options below to update your Xbox Wireless Controller.

Update wirelessly using your Xbox One console Update using a USB cable on your Xbox One console Update wirelessly or via USB using your Windows 10 PC
Make sure you have the latest system update by going to Settings > System > Console info & updates. Install the update if one is available.
Make sure you have the latest controller update by going to Settings > Kinect & devices > Devices & accessories.
Select the controller you want to update.
Select Update, and then select Continue.
Make sure you have the latest system update by going to Settings > System > Console info & updates. Take the update if one is available.
Plug the big end of the USB cable into the USB port on the console.
Plug the small end of the USB cable into the top of the controller.
Instructions to install an update will automatically appear if one is available. Install the update.
Update your PC to the latest version of Windows 10. Your PC must have the Windows 10 Anniversary Edition or later. See Windows Update: FAQ to learn how to get the latest Windows update.
Launch the Microsoft Store and enter the search term "Xbox Accessories." Then select Get to download and install the app.
Open the Xbox Accessories app by selecting Launch once it has finished installing.
Connect your Xbox Wireless Controller by using a USB cable or the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.
You'll see the message Update Required if an update is mandatory. Install the update.
Notes

Getting the latest controller update requires a PC running the Windows 10 Anniversary Update or later. See Windows Update: FAQ to learn how to get the latest Windows update.
The Xbox Accessories app is only available on Windows 10.
Updating your Xbox Wireless Controller firmware over Bluetooth is not supported.
Using an Android device to update your Xbox Wireless Controller is not supported.
Step 3: Make sure your Android device and operating system are Samsung Gear VR compatible

Step 4: Update Minecraft: Gear VR Edition to the latest version in the Oculus app

You must have the latest version of Minecraft: Gear VR Edition [PE version 0.16]. Follow these steps to check your version and get a required update.

Check your version of Minecraft:

Run the Oculus app from the Android desktop.
Navigate to Library.
Click on the three small dots to the right of the game title.
Select Details.
Scroll to the bottom of the Details window and choose Version Notes. It should be PE version 0.16.
If you need to update Minecraft, follow these steps:

Plug your Samsung phone into the Gear VR headset and put it on.
Navigate to Library in Oculus Home.
Select the Updates tab on the left to view available updates. If your version of Minecraft is out of date, you’ll see the app in the Updates list.
Select Download on the right to update to the latest version.
Launch Minecraft from Library or Recent Apps.

Step 5: Connect your Xbox Wireless Controller to your Android device using Bluetooth

Follow these steps to pair your controller to your Android device using Bluetooth:

Update your Xbox Wireless Controller. See How to update your Xbox One Controller on Windows 10.
Turn on your controller.
Press and hold the bind button for 3 seconds and release.

On your Android device, go to Settings > Bluetooth.
Turn on Bluetooth and select Scan.
Select Xbox Wireless Controller from Available devices. Your device should now show as paired under Paired devices.
Dock your phone to the Samsung Gear VR and confirm Bluetooth is switched on.
Press and hold the Back button.
Select Settings > Bluetooth.

If the technology that makes this work is Bluetooth, does that mean I can pair an Xbox Wireless Controller with any Bluetooth-enabled device?

No. Right now, only select Samsung Galaxy devices are supported. In some cases, you may be able to pair and use the controller on other devices, but with limited functionality. We’re actively exploring the supportability of the controller on additional devices via Bluetooth.

What other games are supported?

Currently, only Minecraft: Gear VR Edition is supported. We’ll announce when additional Gear VR games are supported.
