Developers Create Apps More Easily on the Sprint Network

Developers Praise Sprint for Its Recent Developer Conference and 'Open' StrategySprint Expands Leadership With Additional Location-Based Service Enablersfor Application Developers.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Continuing to lead the application developer community as the most open national wireless carrier, Sprint (NYSE: S) announced that it is expanding its service enabler program, introducing new capabilities for iDEN development and continuing to enrich the tools available through the Sprint Application Developer Program.

From opening night, when 400 developers lined up for new HTC Hero devices and an Android(TM) coding session, Sprint's ninth annual developer conference, held Oct. 26-28, felt new and different. For the first time, the conference was held in Silicon Valley and registration was open to the general public. More than 1,300 developers, enterprise partners and industry influencers enjoyed sessions addressing application development across a range of platforms, including Android, Palm(R) webOS(TM), RIM, Windows Mobile and Java; exploring machine-to-machine solutions; and 4G.

"It was an awesome conference and really got me started on Android development," said Yadong Liu, founder and CTO, M-Square Apps. "I used the free HTC Hero to develop an app called 'Best Quotes.' It is already available on Android Market, and I am planning some more apps to be released in the future."

Sprint's Service Enablers Bring Benefits

As the only carrier to allow developers access to network location-based services, Sprint announced today it is expanding its open location platform with the addition of TechnoCom Corporation to give developers more ways to create new location-based services for Sprint customers. TechnoCom is a location-based aggregator that provides customization and integration support services tailored to call center and IVR-based services.

TechnoCom enables call centers to offer location enhanced services to customers and handle calls more efficiently. Examples of the location-based services that call center customers could offer include:

* Informing customers of the stores or office locations that are closest.
* Routing them based on location to the most appropriate call center or agent.
* Streamlining call center operations and shortening call times.

Sprint launched its open service enabler program in December 2008 with Veriplace and WHERE, and added Alcatel-Lucent, LOC-AID and Useful Networks in June 2009. These platforms protect the privacy and security of Sprint customers while offering third-party mobile, Web, WAP, SMS and widget developers a consistent way to create applications that use the customer's location information (e.g., via GPS or triangulation) with prior permission to provide customized information and services. This also builds on Sprint's Emerging Solutions business, which focuses on integrating mobility into everyday, non-traditional devices.

All of the service enablers provide to developers simple, powerful tools to create and launch location-enabled applications, accelerating and simplifying certification and on-boarding applications that use GPS, triangulation and other location services to provide useful information to customers, while protecting customer privacy.

"We are pleased to add TechnoCom to our developer program as a location-based aggregator," said Len Barlik, vice president of wireless and wireline services for Sprint. "Because developers can work with a variety of specialized service enablers, they can create and launch richer applications that benefit from the speed and utility of the Sprint network. We look forward to seeing the useful and cost effective applications that developers can create for call center management and for other industries."

Developer Sandbox for CDMA and iDEN

In addition, Sprint is the only carrier to offer the application developer community a free Developer Sandbox - open to all Sprint registered developers - that provides access to an expansive set of Sprint network, handset and product capabilities to use in creating applications. The sandbox provides an easy-to-use format where developers can take the Sprint services and mashup with other available third-party services to create innovative web pages and applications. The Developer Sandbox simplifies the developers' ability to leverage Sprint's powerful network services.

Sprint also announced today the expansion of its Developer Sandbox to include iDEN and CDMA capabilities. With iDEN capabilities, developers can create and test innovative applications for Sprint's Nextel and Boost brands.

Sprint's Open Approach

Sprint is committed to helping the developer community offer mobile content and applications to its customers when, where and how they want them. Sprint invests in technology and processes that enable developers to have access to important capabilities unique to Sprint's network, such as location and presence to make their apps richer. Sprint's open approach is also key to the recently formed Emerging Solutions business, which focuses exclusively on the rapid delivery of machine-to-machine and mobile computing devices to businesses and consumers. Sprint Emerging Solutions is open to developing new business models and certifying new types of devices, building on more than 10 years of partnering, with millions of embedded devices running on Sprint's networks.

Sprint's open philosophy:

* Let consumers determine the application winners
* Be easy to do business with
* Create a developer's "Garage" where new innovation happens
* Use the proven Open Internet model as a guide
* Support is best performed by the creators of the content
* Open still requires management
